Independent Study Wrap Up!

This semester for Digital Arts Independent study, I wanted to really focus on animation and character creation. For my animation I wanted to create a trailer for the book The Knife Of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness. To do this, I had to create a story board and a script, I researched how to create a scrolling background, walk cycles for 2- and 4-legged characters, lip-syncing, nesting/pegging, and I had to learn and practice working with a character in a 2-D environment. The only problems I ran into while doing this project was lack of time and lack of knowledge of the programs I was using, but those were easily overcome by looking at tutorials. Even though I didn't finish, I'm happy with the work I did. It helped me learn and practice making my animations smoother. For the character creation portion, I mainly used Corel Painter 12. I would just start drawing and if I liked something or saw potential for one of my drawings, I would expand on it. Usually I would create a plan of what I wanted to do before I would draw it on the computer, but this technique helped me realize that art isn't planned, it just happens. I really enjoyed this year and I'm very proud of the work that I've done in Digital Arts.

Best Friends

Just created a T-shirt for threadless! Just a little something I came up with in Corel Painter. You can critique  it here: Best Friends Critique
Me and my friend were working in photoshop practicing blending two pictures together. It's actually harder than it looks!

Here is my first scene where I am syncing speech. It is really difficult in flash because I'm not used to flash.

I finally finished sketching another mini scene. This one is mostly about getting used to head movements. It is also the first time I've tried lip syncing in flash (I'm not a big fan of it, I'll have to check a tutorial or something). I also had trouble with my audio frame rate being more than my video frame rate (24fps vs 15 fps). Now I know. All my mistakes help me learn more!!!

I decided to complete my in-progress clip by adding in some dialogue. My friend and future brother-in-law Josh helped by doing the voice of Todd and any other noises I needed. This is actually the first time I have worked with audio that I have recorded myself, it was a new and fun experience.

OK I finally finished this scene, I got a bit side tracked because of the background. I liked the sketchy look of my animations and that transferred over to the background design.
Well, I took a little break from my animation and tried to recreate a picture I found using a vectorized image and Corel Painter 12. I wanted to mess around with the natural watercolor brush so here that is! I liked see how much one brush would effect another!

So I wasn't able to work last class because of an assembly but I am almost finished with this scene. I just need to make a background! and the quality of the video isn't too great because I had to do a quick export!

Here is another rough scene, it will soon be finished! I was working on drawing the face at different angles than one would normally draw them.

Here is the finished version of the first scene of my animated trailer of the book Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness! This scene is just a 2-legged walk cycle, 4-legged walk cycle, and a scrolling background. With the background, I wanted there to be a yellow hue to convey a tone of an unfulfilled life.
So this is a rough upload of my first scene, i forgot to paint the characters (oops!) so my life just got 10 times harder! but yeah, so here is scene 1, the next scenes should come a little quicker.
