Independent Study Wrap Up!

This semester for Digital Arts Independent study, I wanted to really focus on animation and character creation. For my animation I wanted to create a trailer for the book The Knife Of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness. To do this, I had to create a story board and a script, I researched how to create a scrolling background, walk cycles for 2- and 4-legged characters, lip-syncing, nesting/pegging, and I had to learn and practice working with a character in a 2-D environment. The only problems I ran into while doing this project was lack of time and lack of knowledge of the programs I was using, but those were easily overcome by looking at tutorials. Even though I didn't finish, I'm happy with the work I did. It helped me learn and practice making my animations smoother. For the character creation portion, I mainly used Corel Painter 12. I would just start drawing and if I liked something or saw potential for one of my drawings, I would expand on it. Usually I would create a plan of what I wanted to do before I would draw it on the computer, but this technique helped me realize that art isn't planned, it just happens. I really enjoyed this year and I'm very proud of the work that I've done in Digital Arts.
